Copenhagen for First Time Visitors
Copenhagen is rightly famous for its most renowned inhabitant the Little Mermaid but there is so much more to the city than her. On this tour I will take you around the classic Copenhagen sights and show you the heart of this fascinating city.
The tour will start at the place that has always been the seat of power in Denmark, the palace of Christiansborg. The tour then takes in the core of the old medieval city where we will visit the Cathedral, the University, Round Tower and the old town square. Along the way I will tell you about many of the characters who lived in this oldest part of Copenhagen.
From the old city we head towards the waterfront and the charming canal at Nyhavn, the new harbour. Filled with colourful old buildings and with an equally colourful past, Nyhavn has always been a favourite watering hole for Copenhageners and it is a great place to see the old sailing ships, smell the sea air and take in Copenhagen's maritime past. From Nyhavn the tour goes to the Palace of Amalienborg, the home of the Royal Danish family. We will watch the changing of the Royal Life guards if possible with their characteristic bearskin hats and sabres - for this we must be by Amalienborg at 11.55 AM.
Finally we pass through the charming old sailor's quarter of Nyboder with its yellow painted houses and on to the Citadel, Kastellet. This is the best preserved 17th century fortress anywhere in Europe. Kastellet is surrounded by interesting sites including the Gefion fountain, St Albans church and of course the Little Mermaid where the walk of the beautiful city of Copenhagen ends.
