Svendborg, the Cosmopolitan Town - kind of...
Join me on a guided tour of the Svendborg harbour. It is not only a well preserved historical landmark, it is still a commercial port in operation. In the summer the harbour is also a meeting place for wooden sailing ships from all over the world.
You can still see how this was a significant port in the golden days of the sailing ships in the Baltic and Skagerack. The port of Svendborg still houses one of the leading shipyards worldwide, specialized in maintenance and repair of historical and wooden ships. There is a maritime academy, shipping companies, actually MAERSK originated from here, the ferries are stil leaving for the small islands several times a day - and some of the historic pubs are still in operation.
We start our tour at Træskibsbroen, the wooden bridge which is the historical centre of the harbour and go on to Bølgen, the Wave where there is a wonderful view of the whole harbour area.
This guided tour ends on Frederiksøen, where the interesting shipyard is, and where cultural and maritime industry now coexist harmoniously.
Let's go and discover Svendborg together!
