Tour suggestions Funen
Delightful Funen has always been renowned for its manor houses, its apples and berries. But wait - there is much much more.
You will not find a bigger concentration of Manor Houses anywhere in Denmark, not even in and around Copenhagen. Why is that? Obviously because Funen is one of the nicest places in all of Denmark. The landscape is lush and varied, the ground fertile, the people are friendly. And anywhere you go, there is no more than 30 kilometres to the sea. This was very important in the days of sailing ships, and before we had the railroads and roads covered with tarmac. The are so very many wonderful sights to see in this nature - from Helnæs in the south to Fynshoved in the north and Lillebælt in the west. They are spectacular. Visiting them with a guide would ensure that you not only get to see the main points of interest, you would also hear the stories, get the explanations and know the fact. This is seeing, hearing and understanding - don't miss out. And then there are the towns and villages too.
Funen market towns
Funen island is renowned for its fertile soil, delicious farm products and organic food. Especially on the east coast, there are a great number of orchards, producing some of the best appples in the world. Maybe they are not competitive with the industrial apples produced in warmer climates. Still, their taste and fresh acidity is unsurpassed.
The market town Svendborg is best known for its charming harbour and beautiful sights towards the islands just south of Funen. Faaborg has its belltower - without a church though. The folklore claims it is due to interference by the devil, but this is probably not true. The naval hero Peter Willemoes was born in Assens and set his mark in the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 where also the Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson was present being second-in-command to Admiral Hyde Parker. In Middelfart you find a renowned ceramic museum, CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark as well as the impressive views to both bridges across Lillebælt, the Little Belt. Bogense further north has an annual celebration of roses and Kerteminde to the east celebrates cherries with an annual celebration and finally Nyborg is also worth a visit with its medieval royla castle and annual open-air summer musical. Go with a guide, take the guided city walk and don't miss out on all the stories.
It is a common characteristic of the Funen market towns to be picturesque, have some cobbled, leaning houses, small town gardens and court yards behind the scenes. Furthermore lots of hollyhocs growing up the houses from where the inhabitant can follow life in the street by looking through the street mirrors. Let your guide guide you to all the best places for memorable holiday photoes whether it is modern architecture and modernised harbour areas or the old halftimbered houses. You'll find plenty estates and manors spread all over the island explained by the fertile soil which has given the Funen landowners the best of opportunities to grow lots of crops from the middle ages untill today. One of the best known manor houses is Egeskov Castle. It is a main attraction on Funen and still inhabited by a count who has married royalty and now lives there with his princess. Yes, it is true. The park, the museums and the castle are open for visitors, and you can book a guided tour too. Guideservice Danmark has several good guides available and if you have a bucket list for Funen, Egeskov with a guide ought to be on it.
If you are interested in organic food Funen is the right island to visit. This is where you'll find the lagest number of orchards concentrated on a small area. So come visit the Garden of Denmark and enjoy nature, fairytale atmosphere with the manor houses and go for a swim from one of our lovely sandy beaches.
