Bankruptcy

The word "bankruptcy" refers to an economic collapse.

The word comes from Italian: Banca Rotta - a broken desk. In Northern Italy during the Middle Ages, the bank employees' benches and desks were broken if the employees did not carry out their duties properly.

The Danish nation went bankrupt once during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813.

The word bankruptcy is seldom used in Danish nowadays.
