Bindstouw

The word Bindstouw refers to a knitting room. Knitting was a very popular occupation on cold nights during fall and winter periods in Denmark.

In the summer months, every farmer and peasant had a lot of work to do in the fields. However, when the days grew shorter and the nights longer, they suddenly had some free time on their hands and had to find another occupation in the evening. In Jutland knitting became a popular activity.

On rotational basis, they meet up at each other's houses and sat together while they knitted different items. This was also a perfect occassion to share stories, tales and legends between one another.

The author St. St. Blicher wrote a novel called "E Bindstouw" in 1842, which made the knitting rooms / bindstouws famous and well-known.
