August Bournonville (1805-1879) was a Danish ballet master, and one of Danish ballet's most important choreographers, also on the international scene of his time.

Bournonville re-organised the Danish corps de ballet with inspiration from the French corps.

He was offered jobs abroad, but chosed to stay in Copenhagen for long periods at a time. Here he circumvented other great Golden Age personalities, and he was a central figure in contemporary intellectual life. Bournonville's repertoire is still played today as La Sylphide and Napoli.
