Eckersberg, C. W.

Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) was a Danish painter from the early 19th century. He achived great acknowledgement in the contemporary time.

Eckersberg was a student of the Danish painter Nicolai Abildgaard. In 1809, he received a goldmedal from the Danish Kunstakademi (Academy of Fine Arts).

During a study trip to Paris, Eckersberg also became a student of the great French painter Jaques Louis David.

Eckersberg is particularly known for his depiction of seascapes and studies of nature. However, his portrayal of the Danish citizens and the royal family did also achive great acknowledgement.

Eckersberg was later appointed Professor at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. There, he ended up teaching several young students, who would later become famous Danish painters themselves - including Christen Købke and Martinus Rørbye.

Today, Eckersberg is seen as one of the Danish artists, who initiated the international success that Danish painters enjoyed during the Golden Age in the 19th century.
