Hedeby was a central trade town in the Viking Age. It was situated near Dannevirke.

During the Viking Age, Hedeby was the largest city in Scandinavia. Hedeby is dated back to the 700s. With its central position, it was an important center for trade in Scandinavia.

Hedeby has been the center of many great wars during the Viking Age. In 1050, Hedeby was ruined due to a war fought between the Danish king Svend Estridsen and the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada. Hedeby was burned down and was never recovered or rebuilt.

The town of Hedeby was located near Dannevirke in the Southern part of Jutland, today known as Schleswig.

It is possible to visit the site today. You will not find any signs of Hedeby other than the earth rampart that used to surround the town, but you will be able to visit the near by Viking Museum and learn a thing or two about the Viking Age in Denmark.
