Oldenburg Dynasty, the
From 1448 to 1863, all of the Danish kings were descendants from the House of Oldenburg. Even today, many royal families in Europe are related to the Oldenburgs.
The Oldenburg dynasty stem from the Duchy of Oldenburg, a former German state near Bremen. King Christian I, who where of Oldenburg lineage, ascended to the Danish throne in 1448 through his mother's side of the family.
Between the period 1448-1454 and again between 1667-1773, the Duchy of Oldenburg was part of the Danish Kingdom.
The main branch of the family died out in 1863, but another branch known as the Glücksburgs arised to the throne. The current Danish Queen Margrethe is from this dynasty.
