Lehmann, Orla
Orla Lehmann (1810-70) was a preeminent Danish national-liberal politician.
Orla Lehmann was an opponent of the absolutist government (the Danish monarchy) and argued strongly for universal suffrage. Orla Lehmann wanted a free constitution, modelled on the Norwegian Eidsvoll-Constitution.
Orla Lehmann was imprisoned for his views and his criticism of the absolutist government. His views were crucial to the development of the national-liberal policies and ideas in Denmark during the 1840s.
Orla Lehmann was a proponent of the Scandinavianism og the Eider Policy. With the Danish defeat in the Second Schleswig War both of these policies were well and truly discredited and Orla Lehmann retired from Danish politics.
