The Gundestrup Kettle

The Gundestrup Kettle, also known as the Gundestrup Vessel, is a silver kettle. It is dated to the period between the Celtic and the Roman Iron Age from year 1.

The Gundestrup Kettle was found in a peat moss in Vesthimmerland in 1891. The kettle consists of massive silver, weighs almost 9 kg and has a diameter of 2 m. The Gundestrup kettle is richly decorated with mythical scenery, which are not common in Denmark.

According to archeologists, the Gundstrup kettle comes from the area near the Black Sea, where items have been found that includes similar mythical figures. A theory states that the Gundstrup kettle was imported by the Cimbri people. It is said that the Roman Emperor Augustus received a similar kettle as a present.

The Gundstrup kettle can be seen in the National Museum in Copenhagen.
