The Hjortspring Boat

The Hjortspring boat is a large wooden boat from the pre-Roman Iron Age c. 350 BCE. Th boat was found in the Hjortspring bog in 1921.

The Hjortspring boat is the oldest wooden boat in northern Europe, it is 19 m long and weighs about 530 kg. The boat had to be rowed by 24 men and it was large enough to contain both weapons and supplies. The Hjortspring boat was a war ship and not a trade ship.

The Hjortspring boat, and other boats similar to it, has been depicted during the Bronze Age, for instance in the petroglyphs.

The Hjortspring boat can be seen in the National Museum of Copenhagen.
