Villa was originally the Latin term for a house in the countryside. Later villa took on the meaning of a city - in French "ville".

In Danish we used the "villla" in the sense of a house in the country since the end of the 19th century.

Later the word villa has come to mean a detached house with a yard surrounding it, a one family residence.
