Water and Bread

"In prison on water and bread" was a special kind of prison sentence that was instituted in 1866.

A prisoner, who was sentenced to prison "on water and bread", was only given water, rye bread and coarse salt to eat. A prisoner could be imprisoned for a certain number of days "on water and bread", but there had to be regularly interspersed days, where the prisoner was given normal prison rations. The maximum number of days "on water and bread" was 6 times 5 days.

This particular punishment was abolished in 1930.
