Tours on Zealand & neighbouring islands

If you love modern citylife and the lights of the metropolis, it might prove a challenge to leave Copenhagen and move into the periphery and into the open countryside. The pace is different, not full speed ahead, like in Copenhagen. As soon as you have climbed Valby Bakke and pass Frederiksberg Slot going westwards, you are in the province. The first you will see is Zealand, then Funen and Jutland - and further out it gets exotic and people start talking funny. Well maybe we exaggerate just a tiny bit, but this is not totally off the mark either. Zealand is very different from Copenhagen and well worth visiting in its own right.

Guided tours and walks provide a richer experience of interesting and unfamiliar sights

There are far too many lovely sights on Zealand and the Islands for us to name all that deserve a visit or a detour. There are exciting sights at the manor houses, there are royal castles and palaces and market towns and the marvels of nature. The main city in the region - Roskilde

Roskilde is probably the most important city - beautifully situated at the end of Roskilde Fiord, with two of the main attractions outside Copenhagen. The Roskilde Cathedral might be the biggest attraction on Zealan outside Copenhagen, and certainly on the top 5 list. Since the late middle ages it has been the main burial site of the royal familily of Denmark, 40 kings are buried here. Obviously the Viking Ship Museum is number two in Roskilde. But this is not all. The old city centre and its street names bear witness of life in the old days. Well Street, Blacksmith Street, Harbour Street are the streets of craftsmen and sailors, while names like Saint Ols Lane, Monk Street and Saint Lawrence Street show that Roskilde was the beating religious heart of the kingdom for centuries. The market town are on the beaten track - which happens to mean water deep enough for ships

Further west you find Korsbæk - a contraction of the names Holbæk and Korsør, coined by the popular Danish author Lise Nørgaard - and her invention shows what is so charateristic of the towns on Zealand. Open landscape meets the market town and the town meets the sea at the harbour. All significant towns except Slagelse are on the coast - and actually Slagelse is too, sort of. Back in Viking times the little river Suså was not silted up yet, so the longships could move all the way up to Trelleborg, one of the main fortifications of the time. It goes all the way back to about 980, the time of Sven Forkbeard, even before King Canute. 

The Alaska of Zealand - eh, well, maybe just the northwest

Odsherred has a spectacular natural beauty. Today it can be difficult to imagine how different things were just 150 years ago before the Lammefiord became our national centre for the cultivation of carrots. It used to be a fjord with a depth of up to 7 metres, and the locals earned part of their living as fishermen. After the war with Prussia and Austria i 1864, Schleswig and Holstein were lost, and it was important to use whatever possibilities that were left to improve the realm. Baron Georg Frederik Zytphen-Adeler of Dragsholm (curious name, isn't it?) took the initiative to reclaim the Lammefjord. In the 1870s a dam was built, the water was pumped out, and the rest is history - and an enormous amount of carrots.

Southern Zealand and the Southern Isles

In the south of Zealand and the isles you will see big contrasts in the nature. Lolland is very flat, kept dry by the dam on the coastline, here you can take a nice walk or bike ride. On the other side we have the gigant limecliffs, Møns Klint and Stevns Klint, on Møn and Zealand. Hidden in the cliffs are fossils going all the way back to the tertiary period, complete with with dinasours and meteor showers. The cliffs contains a calcium, which makes the water taste a little different in this area, but can you taste it? Or maybe you would rather go and check the local cherry wine on Lolland?
